The work of Bangalore based DDIR Architecture embodies spatial experiences through the restraint in form illustrating the innate understanding of the fundamental tenets of architecture. This house in Kodaikanal, a hill station in Tamil Nadu, was a response to the introverted two acre site that dictated the orientation of the L-plan vacation home to visually focus on the large red gum eucalyptus tree in the centre of the site. The living room planned as a contiguous large space housing the living, dining and open kitchen areas enjoys a panoramic view of the nature beyond through the floor to ceiling glass fenestrations. The simple form of the house is a manifestation of the firm’s continuing dialogue with the Corbusian modular proportion system which is seen both in plan as well as section. The austerity in material harmonises Dominic Dube’s architectural dictum of simplicity. The home displays an elegance that transcends transient architectural trends and its contemporary minimal design reiterates the timeless nature of simplicity in form.
