This Mumbai penthouse, designed by Abraham John Architects with Alan Abraham in the lead, was conceptualised with an open plan concept to integrate indoor and outdoor spaces. One of the prime design principles followed while designing this house was its orientation to all the natural elements, sun, wind and water. It was important that openness was established with nature at all levels and that was what the designers set out to achieve. Functionality has played a parallel role to aesthetics in the design process. Easy maintenance has been prioritised, by using engineered wood instead of real wood for instance and high quality materials have been used both for a better look and longevity. Recycled tiles on the terrace, solar heaters, solar shades and planning for maximisation of natural light and ventilation ensure that the house’s relationship with nature and its elements extends much beyond just the superficial.
