The Bangalore Workshop
BY AVANI A. PATWARDHAN

  • The Bangalore Workshop organized by the Vimal Jain Foundation and the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore, will be conducted this year from April 1st to 8th, 2018. With its second edition this year, this workshop is modeled on the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass held annually in Sydney.

The workshop will be conducted by Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury. In addition to being accomplished teachers, practitioners and Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipients, they have also been involved with the Glenn Murcutt Masterclass  since its inception in 2000. British architect, Niall McLaughlin, will join the Workshop on the last two days for the final reviews and lectures.

The 2018 workshop will focus on the study of edges of the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. The participants will be invited to suggest ways to negotiate the chaotic urban environment on the street with the serene quality of the campus. With a context of such contrasting conditions, the aim will be to attempt a bridge between these both metaphorically and physically (through architectural and programmatic ideas). Though known internationally as a premier academic institution, IIMB is isolated from its immediate context and offers no opportunity for a dialogue.

Through this exercise, the participants will have a better understanding of the importance of history and precedent, the site selection process and formal strategies as a process of discovery and invention and the methods of observation and documentation.

Conducted over 7 days, the participants get the opportunity to stay and work on the IIM Bangalore Campus, and attend daily events like lectures, music performances and discussions, in addition to the workshop.
