Bespoke Abstraction

Architect Apurva Amin\'s abstract-art-like residential design uses water as the locus to create an avant-garde environment rooted in Indianness. This stand-alone home in Ahmedabad is sculpted around the principles of conventional Indian architecture and projected through the medium of abstract art, with water as its moral fibre. With a striking combination of plastered masonry work with waif-like fenestrations, and exposed RCC juxtaposed with the lithe beauty of structural steel and the solidity of wood, the bungalow heralds an interesting landscape. Using a water body as the focal element, the home is simulated around the principles of the traditional courtyard and characterized by a perceptive visual connectivity that alleviates inside-outside transitions - although in a completely modern idiom.
