Building a bungalow in the middle of a concrete jungle calls for innovation in design; especially when three generations of a family have to be catered for in a single home. The Nimbalkar residence in the heart of Pune is surrounded by tall buildings and housing complexes. With the tight plot area, Architect Sunil Patil and Associates was compelled to design a ground floor + two-storeyed home to fit the client’s brief. The challenge here was to define functional spaces and study how the family navigated these spaces. Another concern was that using up most of the plot for the house could leave very little space around the house for greenery and that the structure should not look like a “heavy, uninviting mass.”
The solution was simple and elegant. Architect Sunil Patil incorporated terraces and gazebos into the design of the house to bring in the outdoors and break the monotony of the façade itself. Inside, the light-filled home is serene and almost minimalist in its design and furnishings. The living room is bright and inviting with its double height ceiling and two different seating areas. Grey dominates along with generous helpings of black and white.
