Open Atelier Mumbai deftly mixed client requirements, structural limitations, Vastu factors, and its own signature style calling to create the beautiful interiors of this family home.

Located in Mumbai, this 4BHK apartment was designed for a family of 4. “One essential criterion was to follow Vastu dictates,” reveals the team from Open Atelier Mumbai. “For this project, we experimented with a very selective and refined material palette and introduced distinct geometric designs in different areas like the living room, dining area, kitchen, master bedroom, children’s bedroom, guest bedroom, and the study-cum-puja room.”

One of the highlights is the wooden panel that anchors one end of the main door and then extends to form a false ceiling that continues all the way into the living room. Overall, the design of the living room is unconventional, characterised by concrete walls, marble that is veneer-stained to acquire a specific shade, and rich leather sofas. Adjoining the living room is the balcony that has deck wood flooring and chic outdoor furniture. One of the admirable features in this area is the small vertical garden on one wall that has an automated drip irrigation system created to ease maintenance of the plants.

The entertainment zone within the living room is equipped with an LED unit, motorised screen, and projector. On the other end of the living area is a dining space with a six-seater dining table which was customised using a black laminated surface with a black transparent glass top. The state-of-the-art kitchen is fully-functional, with all the latest amenities; wooden tiles were used for the flooring, while black back-painted glass was used for the kitchen cabinets and panelling. A monochrome colour scheme and smartly concealed storage options keep the kitchen looking clutter-free.

All bedrooms had to be planned and designed smartly with materials that create an illusion of spaciousness. The simplistic master bedroom has a neutral colour scheme and a blend of white lamination with veneer and Statuario marble. A textured wall features an LCD unit. A similar textured wall, sporting an interesting artwork, is also seen behind the bed.

One of the unique design features of this home is that the door and wardrobe shutters are handle-free. Right from the main doors to the wardrobe shutters and even the drawers, none of them have handles or knobs jutting out. “Instead, we have created slits that aesthetically breaks the monotony and lends an edgy touch to these plain surfaces,” states the team.

In the bathroom, wooden ceiling and countertops lend warmth and add to the comfort. For the master bathroom, black marble, and glass for the shower, was used to create an illusion of a bigger space.

The children’s bedroom has wooden flooring, a platform bed, and white ceiling with abstract slits for lights. A lighting element similar to the one on the ceiling was created on the floor as well. These fully-customised lights add character to this space.

Vitrified wooden tiles were used in the minimalistic study that also houses the puja area. A bright chair adds a dash of colour to the otherwise muted colour palette, while a gaming console and an LCD unit are also placed in this area.

Over all, a thorough understanding of the client’s needs, use of impeccable materials, and superior sourcing have resulted in this tasteful and elegant home.
